Can I remove bathroom mold myself or hire a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in my Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, and I’ve just spotted black spots growing in the grout between the tiles behind the toilet. It’s been so humid lately that the ventilation fan can’t keep up. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

Small, surface-level mold on non-porous surfaces like tile grout can often be addressed yourself. For the black spots you've described, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner is more effective than bleach for killing the mold at the root. Bleach only removes the surface color and can leave moisture behind in the porous grout, allowing regrowth.

Given Dubai's high humidity, the root cause is almost always excess moisture. After cleaning, run your bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider using a portable dehumidifier. Wiping down wet walls and fixing any leaky seals is crucial.

Hire a professional if the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, if it has penetrated behind the tiles or into drywall, or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities. A professional inspection uses moisture meters to find hidden dampness and can provide lab analysis to identify the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. In apartments, persistent mold can sometimes indicate a building envelope issue or leak from another unit, which requires a specialist's diagnosis.
