How to treat closet mold and prevent moisture in JVC?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah Village Circle townhouse has started to get dark black spots on the back wall, and our clothes have a faint damp smell. It’s been getting worse since the weather turned more humid a couple of months ago. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber should I put in there to stop it from coming back?

That black spotting and damp smell in your JVC closet is a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, extremely common here during the humid season. The wall is likely a cold surface where moisture from the air is condensing, creating the perfect damp environment for mold.
For immediate treatment, first address the moisture source. Wipe down the affected wall and any hard surfaces with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Discard any porous, heavily affected items like cardboard boxes. For clothes with a musty smell, a hot wash cycle with an additive like baking soda is often effective. Prevention is critical, as simply cleaning will not stop it from returning. A small, electric dehumidifier with a built-in humidistat is far more effective than disposable moisture absorbers for a space of that size in Dubai's climate. Set it to maintain 50-55% humidity. Ensure the closet door is left slightly ajar to allow for air circulation. Check that your AC is running consistently, as this is your primary whole-home dehumidifier. If the mold covers more than one square meter, has penetrated the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use a moisture meter to identify any hidden condensation issues or leaks and perform air or surface sampling to confirm the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. In many JVC townhouses, this is an issue with the external wall's insulation, a problem that requires a more permanent solution than a dehumidifier alone. |
