How to safely remove mold from bedroom for child's health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I’ve just found black spots spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah, which must have been hidden there for months. I’m really worried about their health and need to get this sorted quickly. What is the most effective and child-safe method to completely remove it and prevent it from coming back?

Hidden mold behind furniture is a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use, which can create condensation on cooler walls. For your children's health, the removal method depends on the extent.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, apply it to the mold, scrub gently, then dry the area completely. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and can irritate the lungs. However, given the hidden nature and the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible spots are often just the fruiting body; the root structure can be deep within the drywall. Effective remediation requires removing the contaminated material, HEPA vacuuming, and treating the area with antimicrobial solutions. Crucially, the underlying moisture source must be identified and fixed—often a leaking AC condensate drain pipe or external water seepage. To prevent recurrence, ensure the room is well-ventilated, keep the AC drip tray and drain line clean, and consider using a dehumidifier. For health concerns, a lab test can identify the mold species, which helps assess the risk and confirms the cleanup was successful. |
