Is black mold urgent for my kids' health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this damp, earthy smell since the heavy rain a couple of weeks ago, and I just found a patch of black spots spreading from behind their wardrobe. I'm really worried about their health as they've both been sneezing a lot more lately. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, and could it already be affecting the air quality?

Yes, this is urgent for your children's health. The damp smell and increased sneezing are strong indicators that the air quality is already compromised. In Dubai's climate, the high humidity following rain creates ideal conditions for mold growth, especially in less-ventilated areas like behind furniture.

The black spots are likely Stachybotrys chartarum (toxic black mold) or another species that thrives on the cellulose in drywall and wood after water damage. These molds release spores and mycotoxins into the air, which can cause persistent respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and worsen asthma, particularly in children.

You need a professional inspection immediately. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing the patch will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout the room. A certified inspector will use a moisture meter to find the water source (often a hidden condensation leak from an AC pipe or a seepage issue from the recent rains) and take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species and concentration. This evidence is critical for an effective remediation plan, which will involve containing the area, removing the contaminated materials, and addressing the root moisture problem to prevent recurrence. Your priority is to keep the children out of that room until the inspection is complete.
