Safest way to clean kids' bedroom mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the holidays, and I’ve just spotted a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of their bedroom closet. It’s an interior wall in our villa in Al Barsha, and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without risking my family’s health?

Black mold in a Dubai villa, especially after a humid period, is a common but serious issue. The safest approach depends entirely on the size of the patch. For a small area (under one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself with precautions. For anything larger, or if it's on a porous surface like drywall, professional remediation is strongly advised to prevent spores from spreading through your AC system.

First, isolate the area. Keep your children and anyone with asthma or allergies out of the room. Seal the closet or area with plastic sheeting if possible. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and disposable gloves. Never touch the mold with your bare hands.

Ventilation is critical. Open windows to create a cross-breeze, but ensure your AC is turned off first to avoid circulating spores. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water in a spray bottle—avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and can push toxins into the air. Lightly mist the moldy patch to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe the area clean with disposable cloths and seal everything in a plastic bag for disposal.

After cleaning, the root cause must be addressed. In Al Barsha, this is almost always excess moisture. Check for a leaking pipe in the wall, condensation from an AC duct, or water ingress from the recent rains. Use a dehumidifier in the room to maintain humidity below 50%.

Given the persistent coughing, this indicates potential long-term exposure. DIY cleaning removes the visible growth but not the hidden spores or mycotoxins. A professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended to identify the species and confirm the air quality is safe before your children sleep in the room again. The recent humidity has likely exacerbated a pre-existing moisture problem within the wall cavity.
