Is black dust in my AC causing my symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a faint, damp smell every time it kicks on, and for the last couple of weeks, my throat has been constantly scratchy and I've been getting headaches. I just pulled the filter out and the edges of it are covered in what looks like black dust. Could this be mold causing my symptoms, and who should I call to properly clean the AC unit?

Yes, the black dust on your filter combined with your symptoms strongly suggests a mold issue. In Dubai's humid climate, AC units are prime locations for mold growth due to condensation. The damp smell you notice is likely microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released by active colonies, which are known to cause the exact symptoms you describe: throat irritation, headaches, and sinus congestion.

You should first stop using that AC unit to prevent further spore dispersal. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing the colony without proper containment can spread a high concentration of spores throughout your apartment.

For a proper resolution, you need a two-step process. First, contact a professional mold inspection service that can identify the species and the extent of the contamination inside the unit and ductwork using lab testing. This is critical, as some species are more problematic than others. Then, a specialized AC and duct cleaning company with HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments should perform the remediation. The entire system must be cleaned, not just the filter replaced. In Dubai, look for providers who can show verifiable before-and-after testing data to confirm the job was done correctly.
