How to prevent mold in Dubai closet with damp smell?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has started to get a weird, damp smell, especially on the leather bags and shoes I store in there. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago when the humidity really spiked. I'm worried it's the beginning of a mold problem. What's the best way to prevent mold from growing in closets here, aside from just running a dehumidifier?

That damp smell on leather goods is a classic early warning sign for mold in Dubai's climate. The high humidity, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for spores to germinate on organic materials like leather, wood, and even cotton.

Start by removing everything from the closet. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a solution of white vinegar, which can help inhibit microbial growth without damaging surfaces. For the leather items, clean them with a dedicated leather cleaner and allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated area before returning them. Never put damp or even slightly humid items back into an enclosed space.

Ensure the closet has adequate air circulation. This is often the main issue in apartments where AC is run constantly but closets are closed off. Leave the closet doors open for a few hours each day to allow conditioned air to circulate. If the closet has an AC vent, make sure it isn't blocked by shelves or clothing. Using moisture-absorbing products like silica gel packs or calcium chloride-based dehumidifiers inside the closet can provide a localized solution.

Inspect the closet's exterior walls. In many Jumeirah buildings, closets are on perimeter walls that can experience condensation due to the temperature difference between the chilled interior and the hot, humid exterior. This hidden condensation is a frequent source of moisture. If the smell persists after cleaning and improving ventilation, the moisture source might be internal, like a small plumbing leak in the wall, or external from condensation. A professional inspection with a thermal camera and moisture meter can identify these hidden problems that DIY methods often miss.
