How to remove bathroom mold and prevent it spreading?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. It's been incredibly humid lately and the bathroom's small window doesn't seem to provide enough ventilation. What's the most effective way to deal with this myself, and should I be worried about it spreading behind the walls?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is extremely common due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small patch you just noticed, you can likely handle it yourself.

Start by addressing the moisture source. Your small window isn't enough. Run the bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If you don't have one, consider installing one or using a portable dehumidifier. Wipe down wet walls and surfaces with a squeegee after use. This is the most critical step for prevention.

For removal, wear a mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (ensure good ventilation). Scrub the area with a stiff brush. For painted surfaces, be gentle to avoid damaging the finish. After cleaning, let the area dry completely, then consider applying a mold-resistant primer and paint to that corner to help prevent recurrence.

You should be concerned about it spreading behind walls if the moisture problem is chronic. Staining on the ceiling could indicate a leak from the apartment above. If the mold patch is larger than one square meter, returns quickly after thorough cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty smell, it's wise to get a professional assessment. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to check within wall cavities non-invasively, as Dubai's tenant liability regulations often require proof of an internal leak or damage for landlord remediation.
