How to prevent closet mold smell in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on the leather bags and shoes I keep in there. I noticed it about a week after that really humid spell we had, and even though I’ve wiped everything down, the smell comes back. What’s the best long-term solution to control the moisture and prevent this moldy smell from returning in our Dubai humidity?

That damp, musty smell returning after wiping is a classic sign of an active mold colony, not just surface moisture. In Dubai's climate, closets on exterior walls are prime targets for condensation due to the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the humid outside air.
Your immediate step is to remove all items from the closet. Leather is organic and will feed mold growth. Wipe down every surface inside the closet with a dilute vinegar solution, but be aware this only addresses visible spores. For a long-term solution, you need to control the humidity at its source. A small, plug-in dehumidifier or disposable moisture absorber placed inside the closet can make a significant difference. Ensure there is at least a few inches of space between the back wall and your stored items to allow for air circulation. If the smell persists or you see any speckling, the mold may be growing within the wall itself, especially if this is an exterior wall. In such cases, wiping surfaces is ineffective. A professional inspection using a borescope can identify hidden growth in wall cavities. They can also measure the humidity levels inside the closet to determine the best remediation strategy, which is often necessary for a permanent solution in Jumeirah's coastal humidity. |
