Urgent to remove kids' bedroom mold professionally or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I just found a patch of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. We're in an older building in Jumeirah and I know the humidity has been crazy lately. How urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, or can I clean it myself over the weekend?

Given the location in a child's bedroom and the pre-existing respiratory symptoms, professional assessment is recommended before any DIY cleaning. The visible patch is likely just a fraction of the actual growth, as mould colonies spread their root system (hyphae) deep into porous materials like drywall and plaster.

In Dubai's high humidity, especially in older Jumeirah buildings with less efficient insulation, hidden condensation behind walls or under flooring is common. Cleaning the surface with a bleach solution may temporarily remove the colour but leaves the root structure intact, allowing it to regrow quickly and release spores into the room's air, potentially worsening the cough.

A professional inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the moisture source—often a tiny AC condensate leak, capillary seepage from a balcony, or internal condensation. They can also take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol and confirms if it's one of the more problematic types common in humid climates.

For immediate action, move the boxes to improve air circulation, keep the bedroom door closed, and run a dehumidifier if available. The urgency for professional help is high due to the children's symptoms; proper remediation should address the root cause to prevent recurrence, not just the visible stain.
