Black mold in kids' room: DIY or call Dubai proffesional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks and I’ve just found patches of black mold behind the wardrobe in their bedroom, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. I’m really worried it’s affecting their health, especially with the humidity lately. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai?

Given the location on an outside wall in a villa and the health symptoms, this is a case where professional assessment is strongly recommended. The outside walls in older Dubai villas are particularly prone to condensation issues due to the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior. This creates a perfect environment for mold growth inside the wall cavity, which is far more serious than surface mold.
For a small, isolated patch (less than one square meter), a careful DIY approach might be possible. You would need to wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Clean with a mixture of detergent and water, not bleach, as bleach does not kill the roots and can worsen airborne spores. However, the mold behind the wardrobe is likely just the visible tip of a larger problem within the wall. Disturbing it without proper containment could aerosolize a high concentration of spores directly into your children's bedroom, significantly worsening their exposure. A certified professional will use moisture meters to find the source of the water intrusion—often condensation on cold water pipes or a tiny leak in the AC drainage within the wall. They will then set up containment barriers and use HEPA air scrubbers to clean the air during remediation. This controlled process is crucial to prevent the mold from spreading to other parts of the home. The most reliable firms will provide before-and-after testing from an accredited lab to verify the spore count in the room's air has returned to safe levels. Given the health of your children, this verification is the most important step. |
