DIY or Professional for Black Mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with the recent humidity, it seems to have spread quickly. I’m worried it might be harmful, but I’m not sure if it’s something I can clean myself with bleach or if I need to call a professional company to handle it. Is this a DIY job or should I get professional help for mold in Dubai?

Black mold in a Dubai bedroom closet is a common issue driven by the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The first step is to identify and stop the moisture source, which is often condensation from an AC supply duct running through the closet or a slow leak.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be effective if you address the root cause. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean with a detergent solution, not bleach, as bleach doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry and improve air circulation. A dehumidifier or moisture absorber in the closet can help.

However, professional help is strongly recommended if the mold covers a larger area, has returned after previous cleaning, or if household members experience persistent respiratory issues, headaches, or fatigue. Professionals use containment and HEPA filtration to prevent spores from spreading during remediation. The most critical service is diagnostic testing to identify the mold species and confirm the moisture source has been eliminated, which is the only way to ensure it won't return. In many cases, the visible growth is just the surface manifestation of a deeper problem within the wall or ceiling.
