How to remove and prevent black mold in Jumeirah Park?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah Park. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. What's the best way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading, and how can I prevent it from coming back for good?

Small, isolated patches of black mold on a wall can often be managed with careful DIY methods, but the key is addressing the moisture source. Given its location on an exterior wall in Jumeirah Park, the recent humidity is almost certainly the catalyst, but the root cause is likely a thermal bridge or minor condensation issue common with our climate.

For removal, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and covering the floor. Scrub the patch with a dedicated mold remover solution or a mixture of white vinegar and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the roots. After scrubbing, wipe the area down with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely.

Preventing its return is the critical step. This wall is likely colder than the room's air, causing condensation when the humid air hits it. Improve air circulation in the closet; leaving the door ajar can help. Wipe down the wall in that corner periodically during humid months to remove any ambient moisture. For a long-term solution, consider having the insulation in that exterior wall checked, as inadequate insulation is a frequent cause of such condensation in Dubai villas.

If the patch is larger than one square foot, has penetrated deeply into the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use thermal imaging to identify the exact condensation point and moisture meters to confirm the wall is dry, which is the only way to guarantee it won't recur.
