Is this black mold urgent to fix in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Al Barsha. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading fast but I can't tell. How urgent is it that I get a professional to look at this, or is it something I can handle myself with a cleaner from the supermarket?

It's urgent to investigate, but not necessarily a full-blown emergency requiring immediate evacuation. The location is a major red flag: a closet on an exterior villa wall in Al Barsha is a classic hotspot for condensation and hidden moisture, especially with the recent high humidity. Those few visible spots are often just the tip of the iceberg, as mould grows behind walls and under finishes.

You can attempt a small-scale clean yourself if the area is truly confined to less than one square meter. Use a microfiber cloth and a supermarket mould cleaner containing quaternary ammonium compounds. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, this is a temporary fix if the underlying moisture source—like condensation from the AC, a tiny leak, or thermal bridging in the wall—isn't identified and resolved. It will return.

Given the climate and the fact it's on an exterior wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden dampness you can't see. The goal isn't just to clean what's visible but to find and stop the water source. For a proper diagnosis of the mould type, a sample would need to be sent to a lab for culture, which is the only way to know if it's one of the more concerning species common in damp buildings here. Without addressing the root cause, any DIY solution is likely to be short-lived.
