Mold behind wardrobe causing coughs: call management first?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I was rearranging furniture yesterday. The wall feels damp and the room has a weird stale smell, especially when the AC isn't running.
What's the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call the building management first, or get a professional mold inspection myself?

Call building management immediately. Dubai Law No. 26 of 2008 makes landlords responsible for maintaining properties to a habitable standard, which includes addressing dampness and mold that affect tenant health. They are obligated to investigate and fix the source of the moisture, which is likely a hidden leak or severe condensation from the AC unit.
Given the symptoms and visible growth, a professional inspection is also strongly advised. The damp wall and stale smell indicate an active moisture problem that building maintenance may only patch superficially. A certified inspector can identify the exact mold species through lab analysis and use moisture meters to find the full extent of the problem behind the wall, which is critical for proper remediation. This is a common issue in Jumeirah due to high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation points. Until it's handled, keep the children out of the room and improve air circulation. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores and worsen the coughs. The remediation process must address the root moisture source to prevent recurrence. |
