How to prevent mold in closet on outside wall?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting these black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there, and it’s definitely mold. This is the second winter it’s happened, always after the humidity spikes. I’m tired of throwing stuff out. What’s the most effective way to stop this from coming back every year? Should I be using a dehumidifier in there or is there a better solution?

Your closet's outside wall is a classic cold bridge in Dubai's climate, where exterior heat meets interior AC cooling, creating constant condensation. This moisture, combined with our high humidity, provides the perfect environment for mold to return annually.
First, address the moisture source. A small desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet is highly effective, as these units work well in the cooler temperatures of AC spaces. Run it continuously during the humid winter months. Ensure there's a small air gap between the wall and your stored items; never pack the closet tightly. For the wall itself, consider applying a mold-resistant primer and paint, which can help inhibit growth. However, these are temporary fixes if the root cause is a significant temperature differential. The most effective long-term solution is to improve the insulation on that exterior wall to prevent condensation from forming in the first place. This is a structural repair that requires a professional assessment. Since this is a recurring issue damaging property, a professional inspection is warranted to measure the surface temperature and humidity levels within the wall cavity. They can identify if the problem is insufficient insulation or perhaps a minor leak during rare rain events. For valuable items like leather, a preventative wipe with a vinegar solution can help, but stopping the moisture is the only way to prevent annual recurrence. |
