Safely remove bathroom black mold with kids home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m starting to worry. I’ve just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner of our master bathroom where the wall meets the ceiling, probably from the steam of our daily showers. We live in a villa in Al Barsha and I’m concerned about their health. What’s the safest way to remove this myself without exposing my family to more spores?

Black mold in bathrooms is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. For a small patch, you can safely remove it yourself with precautions to minimize spore exposure.

First, ensure the room is well-ventilated; open a window and run the exhaust fan if you have one. Before starting, move your family, especially the children, to a different part of the villa and keep the bathroom door closed. Wear an N95 mask, safety goggles, and disposable gloves. For a non-porous surface like painted drywall or tile, a simple solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to four parts water) is effective. Spray the area, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Never mix cleaning products. After scrubbing, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and dispose of all cleaning materials in a sealed bag.

The key is to avoid dry brushing or sanding, as this aerosolizes spores. For painted walls, the mold may have penetrated; if it returns quickly, the drywall may need to be cut out and replaced. Given the children's coughing, which could be irritated by ongoing low-level spore release, a professional inspection is wise to assess if there's a larger moisture issue or hidden growth within the ceiling void, which is common in villas with roof leaks or AC condensation drain problems. A company with its own microbiology lab can identify the mold type and provide a remediation plan to ensure it's resolved safely.
