Should we hire a pro for mold near baby's room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It’s been worse since the humidity spiked last month. My husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach, but I'm worried about our baby sleeping in the next room. Should we call a professional company to handle this, or is the DIY approach safe enough?

Given the location near your baby's room and the fact it's returned with high humidity, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't address the moisture source or the root structure of the mold, which will almost certainly regrow. More critically, DIY scrubbing can aerosolize spores, potentially increasing your baby's exposure to irritants in the adjacent room.

In Dubai's climate, this is almost certainly a condensation issue from your AC system, either from a poorly insulated external wall or a ductwork leak creating a constant damp environment. A pro will use a moisture meter to find the exact source—something you can't DIY. They can also take an air or tape-lift sample for a lab culture to identify the species, which is crucial for assessing risk levels near a nursery.

For a situation involving an infant and recurring growth, the safe approach is a professional assessment. The initial diagnostic visit should identify the moisture source and provide a clear scope of the contamination. Any reputable company will explain exactly what needs to be done and why, before any work begins.
