Is mold under carpet causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah and found a bunch of black spots underneath, near the wall. It’s been really humid lately and I’m worried it’s been there a while. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, and could this be the reason for their coughs?

Yes, mold under your carpet could definitely be contributing to your kids' coughs. In Dubai's high humidity, especially with AC condensation issues in villas, hidden mold growth under carpets is common when moisture gets trapped. The black spots you found are releasing spores into your indoor air, which are a known respiratory irritant.

This situation warrants a professional inspection. Disturbing it further by pulling more carpet can release a large amount of spores at once. An inspector can identify the moisture source—often a small AC leak, seepage from the slab, or humidity from a poorly ventilated room—and test the mold to determine its type. This is important because some species are more problematic than others.

For your children's health, it is urgent to address this. Continuous exposure to mold spores can cause persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms. The treatment involves first fixing the underlying moisture problem completely, then properly containing and removing the contaminated materials. A reputable company will provide before-and-after air quality test results to verify the space is safe again.
