How to safely remove mold from bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It's gotten worse since the weather got more humid. I'm worried it's mold and I'm not sure if I can just wipe it down with bleach myself or if I need to call one of those professional cleaning companies. What's the best way to handle this safely?

That black spot pattern spreading in your closet is a classic sign of a mold issue, made worse by Dubai's high humidity. The moisture likely comes from condensation against an exterior wall or from humidity being trapped behind stored items.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. A simple bleach solution is not recommended as it only removes the surface colour and leaves the moisture problem unresolved. Instead, use a dedicated mold removal product or a mixture of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source by improving air circulation in the closet and ensuring the room's AC is functioning properly to reduce humidity. However, given that it's behind clothes and has been spreading for some time, the growth is likely more extensive than it appears, possibly inside the wall. DIY cleaning often fails to address the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth. For a recurring or larger problem, a professional inspection is the safest approach. They can identify the exact species and moisture source, which is critical for effective remediation. In the UAE, reputable companies should provide documented before-and-after testing from an accredited lab to verify the space is truly mold-free and safe, not just visually clean. This is the only way to be certain the health risk for your family has been resolved. |
