How to remove damp smell from Dubai closet permanently?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on the leather jackets and bags I have stored in there. We had that period of heavy dew and humidity a couple of weeks ago and that’s when I first noticed it, but now it seems to be getting worse even though the weather has dried out. I’m worried about it spreading to our clothes and causing health issues. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this smell and prevent the mold from coming back for good in our climate?

That damp smell is a strong indicator of hidden mold growth, likely feeding on the organic material in your leather goods and the closet itself. The initial humidity event provided the moisture, and the enclosed space allowed it to thrive. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue, especially in closets on exterior walls where temperature differences can cause condensation.

First, remove all contents from the closet immediately. Leather items will need professional cleaning and conditioning to salvage them and prevent further microbial growth. Wash all other clothing and fabrics in hot water if possible. To address the smell and mold, you cannot just mask it; the source must be eliminated.

Thoroughly clean the entire closet interior with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated antimicrobial cleaner, scrubbing all surfaces, shelves, and walls. Ensure the closet is completely dry—using a fan or dehumidifier is crucial. Inspect for any visible mold growth, which may appear as faint speckling or discolouration on walls, baseboards, or the back of shelves.

For a permanent solution, you must control the humidity. This is non-negotiable in Dubai. Leave the closet doors open periodically to allow air circulation from your AC. Consider placing a renewable desiccant like silica gel inside. For closets storing susceptible items, a small, plug-in electric dehumidifier can be effective.

If the smell persists after cleaning, or if you find any significant visible mold growth, the issue is likely behind the walls or under the flooring. In these cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to find the hidden source. Remediation without identifying the root cause will lead to recurrence. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide definitive identification and targeted remediation plans, which is critical for resolving persistent problems.
