How to permanently remove black mold and stop dampness?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. The wall feels damp to the touch, and I'm worried it's because of the AC unit on the other side of that wall. What's the best way to not only clean this but to stop the dampness from coming back for good?

Black mold behind furniture on a damp wall is a common issue in Dubai, often caused by thermal bridging and condensation from year-round AC use. The dampness indicates an ongoing moisture source that must be addressed first, or the mold will return.
For a permanent solution, start by identifying the moisture source. The AC unit on the other side of the wall is a prime suspect; its condensate drain line could be blocked or improperly insulated, causing cold surfaces to attract humid air and form condensation inside the wall cavity. This requires a professional HVAC inspection to check the drain pan, line, and insulation. Do not attempt to clean extensive black mold yourself, especially with children experiencing respiratory symptoms. Disturbing it releases spores. A certified mold inspector can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the dampness source and take air/surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type and concentration. Remediation involves fixing the moisture issue (e.g., unclogging the drain, improving wall insulation), then physically removing the contaminated materials. Simply spraying or wiping the surface is insufficient if the wall interior is affected. After removal, the area should be HEPA-vacuumed and treated with antimicrobial solutions. A post-remediation verification test is crucial to confirm the spore count has returned to acceptable indoor levels. This scientific, evidence-based approach is the only way to ensure the problem is solved permanently. |
