How to prevent mold from AC leak in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a couple of weeks. I keep wiping it up, but the carpet underneath the unit has started to feel damp all the time and has a weird, earthy smell. I'm really worried about black mold growing there, especially with our baby sleeping in the next room. What's the most effective way to dry this out and prevent mold from starting in the first place?

Stop wiping and start drying immediately. The damp carpet and earthy smell indicate active microbial growth is already underway. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and constant AC use, this creates a perfect environment for mold.
First, address the source: turn off the AC unit to stop the leak. This is a critical step. Soak up as much standing water as possible with towels, then use a wet-dry vacuum extractor if available. Place a powerful dehumidifier and fans directly at the site to force-dry the carpet and underlying padding. This process must be thorough and continuous; simply airing it out is insufficient. Given the proximity to your baby's room, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The carpet pad underneath is likely saturated and acting as a reservoir, which is nearly impossible to dry effectively without removal. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to confirm the extent of the water damage and take air or surface samples to identify if and what type of mold has begun to colonize. To prevent recurrence, the AC unit must be serviced to fix the root cause of the leak, which is often a clogged condensate drain line—a very common issue here. After remediation, ensure the area is completely dry before restoring the AC. For ongoing prevention, maintain regular AC servicing and consider using a dehumidifier in the room during peak humidity months. |
