Is mold causing my kids' cough in Abu Dhabi?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I’ve just pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Khalifa City villa and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from the last time we had a leak. Could this be what’s making them so sick, and who do I even call to get this properly cleaned in Abu Dhabi?

Yes, the mold behind your sofa is very likely contributing to your children's persistent cough. In Abu Dhabi's climate, indoor mold thrives due to high humidity and condensation, especially in areas with past water leaks. The continuous coughing is a common reaction to inhaling mold spores, which irritate the respiratory tract.

For a situation this severe, you need a professional mold inspection and remediation company, not a general cleaner. They will assess the full extent of the growth, identify the mold species, and contain the area to prevent spores from spreading throughout your villa during cleanup. The cleanup process itself involves specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers.

Look for a provider that offers documented before-and-after testing to verify the spore count in your air has been returned to a safe level. This is a critical step many companies skip. While general cleaning might remove the visible stain, only proper remediation addresses the hidden spores causing the illness.

In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room as much as possible and keep the children away from the affected area. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem. The priority is a professional assessment to create a targeted remediation plan for your home.
