Urgent to hire pro for black mold in shower grout?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bathroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just noticed black spots growing in the grout between the tiles near the shower. With this humidity, it seems to be spreading. How urgent is it to get a professional to handle this, or can I tackle it myself with a trip to ACE Hardware first?

Black mold in shower grout is common in Dubai due to high humidity and constant condensation. For a small, surface-level patch, a DIY approach is often sufficient. Scrub the area thoroughly with a stiff brush and a dedicated grout cleaner or a solution of white vinegar. After cleaning, ensure the bathroom is kept as dry as possible; use an exhaust fan during and for 30 minutes after showers and wipe down wet surfaces.

However, if the mold has penetrated the grout or is recurring persistently despite your efforts, the moisture source may be behind the tiles. In villas, this can indicate a more serious issue like a hidden leak in the plumbing or poor waterproofing. At this point, professional assessment is recommended to identify the root cause. Remediation without addressing the underlying moisture will only provide a temporary solution. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to check for concealed dampness and determine if the grout needs to be resealed or replaced.
