Black mold in AC vent: DIY clean or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making us all a bit wheezy, and I just found patches of black mold around the air vent in the master bedroom. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can handle myself with cleaning spray, or do I need to call a professional company for AC cleaning, and what’s the typical cost for that in Dubai?

Black mold in AC vents, especially in Jumeirah Village Circle's high humidity, is a health concern that typically requires professional assessment. The persistent humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold to thrive inside the ductwork, not just on the visible vent cover.

For a small, superficial patch, you can carefully clean the vent cover itself with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. However, if the mold is inside the duct or has returned after cleaning, the source is deeper within the system. DIY cleaning often just disperses spores, worsening the air quality and your wheezing symptoms.

Professional remediation is advised here. The process involves containing the area, using HEPA vacuums to remove spores, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial treatments to the ducts. The critical step is identifying and correcting the moisture source—often a clogged condensate drain line, which is extremely common in Dubai's climate due to the AC's constant operation.

Costs vary significantly based on the AC system type (central vs. split) and the extent of contamination. For a standard apartment, expect a qualitative cost range. Always request a detailed assessment and a scope of work that includes post-remediation verification to ensure the issue is resolved.
