Mold behind toilet: DIY fix or hire Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle villa for two years and just noticed these black spots spreading in the corner behind the toilet where the wall meets the floor. It's been extra humid lately and the smell is getting really strong. I'm worried about my family's health, but I have no idea what this would cost to fix. Should I hire a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai, or is this something I can handle myself with products from Ace Hardware?

The black spots behind your toilet are likely Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (black mold), both common in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The strong smell indicates active growth, which often means it has penetrated beyond the surface.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can work. Use a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover from a hardware store. Never use bleach—it only removes surface color, not the root structure. After cleaning, run a dehumidifier or your AC’s dry mode to keep humidity below 55% and prevent regrowth.

Given the location (wall-to-floor corner) and the strong odor, the mold may have spread into the grout, behind the tiles, or under the flooring. This is common in villas where persistent moisture wicks into porous materials. In these cases, DIY cleaning is temporary.

Professional assessment is recommended here. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden spread. Remediation involves containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to address the root cause. For a definitive answer on health risk, a lab test can identify the species.

In Dubai, villa bathrooms are high-risk areas due to construction materials and climate. If the smell persists after cleaning or you see regrowth within weeks, stop DIY and call a professional. The cost to fix depends entirely on how far it has spread, which isn’t visible until an assessment is done.
