Mold in closet: AC spread risk and inspection needed?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's gotten worse since last week's humidity. What's the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should I be worried about it spreading through the AC?

That black mold patch in your closet is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall. This creates condensation, providing the perfect environment for mold to grow.

You are right to be concerned about AC spread. While the AC itself doesn't create the mold in this instance, its airflow can disperse the spores from that localized patch throughout the room and potentially into the ductwork, affecting air quality. For a case like this, a proper inspection is advised to assess the extent.

The best approach is a professional mold inspection. A credible inspector will do more than a visual check; they use a moisture meter to find the exact dampness source in that wall and may take an air sample from the bedroom to compare spore counts with the outside air. This determines if your indoor air quality is being compromised. They should provide a detailed report with their findings and recommended remediation steps.

Look for a provider that uses a third-party accredited lab for analysis, as this gives you unbiased, verifiable data on the mold type and concentration. This is crucial for understanding any potential health risks and ensuring the remediation plan is effective. In Dubai's climate, identifying and fixing the moisture source—often inadequate insulation or a minor leak—is the only way to prevent it from returning after cleaning.
