How to clean and prevent mold on bedroom ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where my bedroom wall meets the ceiling in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It’s been really humid lately and I think it might be spreading. What’s the best way to get this properly cleaned and treated so it doesn’t come back?

Black spots at the wall-ceiling junction are a common issue in Dubai apartments, especially during humid periods. This is often caused by condensation forming on the cooler ceiling surface, creating a perfect environment for mold growth.
For a small area, you can clean it yourself with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, simply cleaning the visible growth is a temporary fix. The underlying moisture problem must be addressed to prevent it from returning. The most effective long-term solution involves identifying and stopping the moisture source. In JVC apartments, this is frequently due to poor insulation in the ceiling void, leading to condensation from the AC ducting or a difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures. Improving ventilation in the room can also help reduce humidity levels. After resolving the moisture issue, the affected area should be properly treated with an antimicrobial solution and repainted with a mold-inhibiting primer and paint. For recurring or spreading mold, a professional inspection is recommended to accurately diagnose the hidden cause, such as a minor leak in the AC drain line or insulation gaps. Companies with microbiology labs can test to identify the mold type and provide a targeted remediation protocol, which is often necessary for a permanent solution. |
