Urgent: mold exposure and kids' cough, see doctor?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold growing on the wall behind the boxes. With the humidity lately, it must have spread. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, and should I be taking my family to a doctor right away?

Yes, take your children to a doctor immediately and inform them about the mold discovery. A persistent cough in kids can be from many things, but new mold exposure is a significant aggravating factor that a physician needs to know to guide diagnosis and care.

For the mold itself, this is an urgent situation requiring professional remediation, not just cleaning. The combination of high UAE humidity and a confined, dark space like that under-stairs cupboard creates a perfect environment for rapid mold growth. The visible patch is likely just the surface of a larger colony that has penetrated the wallboard or backing. Disturbing it yourself by moving boxes risks releasing a large number of spores into your home's air, which the AC system can then circulate.

Do not attempt to clean it with bleach or other store-bought solutions. The priority is containment. Keep the cupboard door closed and the area sealed off from the rest of the house, especially from children and anyone with asthma or allergies. A proper remediation team will set up containment barriers, use HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores during removal, and safely dispose of contaminated porous materials like boxes and potentially the affected wall section.

After remediation, the underlying cause must be addressed—this is often condensation from cold pipes in the hot space or a minor, unnoticed water leak. Finally, post-remediation verification testing by an independent third party (not the remediation company) is critical to confirm the spore count in the air has returned to safe, background levels before you use the space again.
