Black mold behind sofa: heatlh risks for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and their allergies are going crazy. I finally pulled out our large sofa in the living room to look for a lost toy and found a huge patch of black mold growing on the wall behind it, probably from a slow AC leak I never noticed. I’m really worried they’ve been breathing this in. What kind of health risks are we actually facing and should I take them to a doctor here in Dubai right away?

Black mold exposure, especially for children with existing allergies, can significantly worsen respiratory symptoms like chronic coughing, congestion, and wheezing. The primary risk is to their respiratory systems, as inhaling mold spores irritates the airways and can trigger severe allergic reactions. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, this is a common but serious indoor health issue.

Yes, you should have them seen by a doctor to address their current symptoms. Inform the doctor about the mold discovery, as this is a critical piece of their medical history. For the mold itself, do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing it will release a massive cloud of spores into your home's air. The wall material needs to be assessed by a professional; drywall often requires cutting out and replacing the affected section after the moisture source (the AC leak) is repaired.

A professional inspection is essential to determine the full extent of the growth, which often spreads inside wall cavities. They can perform air quality testing to identify the spore concentration in your living space and the specific type of mold, which informs the remediation protocol. In many cases, containment of the area and specialized HEPA filtration equipment are needed to prevent cross-contamination during the removal process. The goal is to return the indoor air to a safe, breathable condition.
