Is bedroom mold causing my husband's health issues?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which shares a wall with the bathroom. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for the past month, and I'm starting to worry it's connected. Is this type of mold in a bedroom dangerous enough to cause these symptoms, and what's the first step we should take to deal with it properly?

It's very possible the mold is contributing to your husband's symptoms. The black patch in a closet adjacent to a bathroom is a classic sign of a humidity issue, which is extremely common in Dubai due to our climate. The persistent stuffy nose and headaches upon waking are common reactions to mold spore exposure, especially during sleep when you're in one room for hours.
The first step is to identify the moisture source. In a closet-bathroom setup, it's often a small leak from plumbing in the wall or, more commonly, condensation from an uninsulated AC duct running through the space. High bathroom humidity seeping through the wall can also be the culprit. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem. The symptoms suggest spores may be airborne in the bedroom. Given the symptoms and the location's potential for hidden moisture, a professional inspection is the most reliable course of action. They can use a moisture meter to find the source within the wall and an air quality test to identify the spore count and species in your bedroom. This is crucial, as some species are more associated with respiratory irritation than others. Proper remediation involves fixing the moisture source first, then removing the mold. Simply cleaning it without addressing the cause will lead to its swift return. |
