Found mold behind kids' toy chest. Immediate steps?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and their allergies are going crazy. I finally pulled out their toy chest from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a patch of black mold growing on the back wall behind it, probably from the last time we had the AC condensation leak. What are the immediate steps I should take to make sure they're safe?

First, move the children to a well-ventilated area away from the bedroom and remove the toy chest and any other affected items. Do not attempt to wipe or disturb the mold yourself, as this will release a large number of spores into the air.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, but given this is in a child's bedroom and likely linked to a past AC leak, a professional assessment is strongly advised. The constant high humidity and year-round AC use in Dubai create ideal conditions for mold to regrow if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved.

The immediate health effects you're seeing—persistent coughing and exacerbated allergies—are common reactions to mold exposure, especially in children. Ventilate the room by opening windows if the outdoor humidity is low, but keep the AC running to help control indoor humidity levels.

The critical step is to identify and address the source of the moisture. The AC condensation drain line may be blocked or leaking again, which is a frequent issue here. A certified mold inspector can use moisture meters to find the exact water source and assess the extent of the growth behind the wall. They can also take an air sample to identify the spore types and concentrations, which is crucial for understanding the health risk and planning the proper remediation. Do not repaint or cover the area until the moisture problem is fully resolved.
