How to prevent mold in a dark, humid room?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and this is the room that gets the least sunlight. I’ve wiped it down with vinegar, but I’m worried it’s just going to come back. What’s the most effective long-term solution to prevent mold in a dark, humid room like this?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation-related mold, extremely common in Dubai's humid climate, especially in dark, low-sunlight rooms with poor air circulation. Vinegar only addresses surface growth and will not prevent recurrence without tackling the underlying moisture issue.

Start by improving ventilation immediately. Keep the wardrobe slightly away from the wall and leave the bedroom door open to allow air to circulate. A desiccant dehumidifier is your most effective tool; run it consistently in that room to maintain humidity levels below 60%, the threshold where mold struggles to grow. For villas, ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a clogged drain line can pump humidity directly into your home.

For a long-term solution, the wall itself needs assessment. Moisture meters can determine if the wall has internal dampness, which requires professional remediation. In many cases, applying an anti-mold primer or coating after a proper microbial clean can create a long-term barrier. Given the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the mold species and the full extent of the growth, as it can often spread behind baseboards and within wall cavities unseen.
