AC mold smell causing headaches - clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this damp, earthy smell every time it turns on, and I’ve started getting headaches. I pulled the filter out yesterday and the area around the unit’s vent looks black and dusty. With the humidity lately, I’m worried it’s mold, but I’m not sure if this is something I can clean myself with bleach or if I need to call a professional company to check the ducts.

That damp, earthy smell from your AC, especially when paired with headaches, is a strong indicator of microbial growth, likely mold. Given Dubai's high humidity and our reliance on year-round AC, condensation inside the units and ducts creates a perfect environment for it. The black dust you see around the vent is a major red flag.

Cleaning the visible parts with bleach is not recommended. It only addresses surface mold you can see and may not kill the roots. More importantly, it doesn't address the contamination likely deeper within the ductwork or the AC's evaporator coil, which is the actual source of the smell and spores. Bleach can also damage components and release harmful fumes into your air.

For your situation, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The headaches suggest you are reacting to the air quality, and a proper assessment requires specialized tools like borescopes to inspect deep inside ducts and air quality tests to identify the specific type and concentration of spores. In Dubai, companies should follow DM guidelines for indoor air quality and be able to provide verifiable, lab-documented evidence of the problem and the proposed solution, not just a visual clean. This is the only way to ensure the root cause is resolved and your air is safe to breathe again.
