I've been dealing with black mold in my Dubai apartment for a few weeks now. Has anyone else experienced this? Looking for advice on what steps to take.

Black mold in Dubai apartments is unfortunately common due to our high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source—this is non-negotiable. Common culprits are leaking pipes, AC drain pan overflow, or poor bathroom ventilation.

For a small, isolated patch (less than one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, but always wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, if it’s widespread, recurring, or you notice a musty smell, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness you might miss.

Landlords in Dubai are generally responsible for resolving structural issues causing mold, like fixing leaks or improving ventilation, as per the rental law. Tenants are typically responsible for maintenance-related cleanliness. Document everything with photos and communicate with your landlord in writing.

Given Dubai's climate, controlling indoor humidity is key. Ensure your AC is functioning correctly and consider using a dehumidifier, especially during the more humid winter months. For definitive identification and to understand the health risk, a lab test can specify the mold species. This is particularly important for vulnerable individuals, as some types can cause more significant respiratory irritation than others.
