Black mold in Dubai: DIY removal or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It must have been growing behind our storage boxes for a while because the smell is really strong now. I'm worried it's from a hidden leak or the high humidity. What is the best way to handle mold removal here in Dubai—should I call a professional company or is this something I can safely tackle myself with products from ACE Hardware?

Given Dubai's high humidity and the fact it's on an exterior wall, this is likely a condensation issue exacerbated by lack of air circulation behind the boxes. The strong smell indicates a significant colony that has been growing for some time.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a thorough DIY approach can be effective. Use a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water to physically remove the mould. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and doesn't address the root cause. Afterwards, use a dedicated mould remover or a diluted vinegar solution from a hardware store to disinfect the area. Crucially, you must identify and correct the moisture source. Improve air circulation in the closet, ensure the AC is functioning properly to control humidity, and consider using a moisture absorber.

However, the location on an exterior wall raises the possibility of a more serious issue, like a hidden leak from a pipe or poor insulation. If the mould returns quickly after cleaning, if the drywall or backing is soft or crumbling (indicating water damage), or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness that DIY methods can miss. For verifiable remediation, look for a company that provides before-and-after lab testing to confirm the mould species and that the environment has been returned to a safe, normal fungal level.
