Is AC mold in our bedroom dangerous and urgent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m starting to see small black spots around the vent in our main bedroom. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache every morning for the past few days. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, and should we be sleeping in another room until it’s fixed?

The damp smell and black spots around your AC vent are strong indicators of microbial growth, which is common in Dubai's climate due to high humidity and constant AC use. Your husband's symptoms—morning headaches and congestion—are consistent with exposure to mold spores and poor indoor air quality. This situation warrants prompt attention.

Given the visible growth and onset of symptoms, it is advisable to sleep in another room until the system is inspected and cleaned. Continuing to sleep there exposes you to a higher concentration of allergens and potential irritants being circulated directly into the breathing zone.

For a situation like this in JVC, a professional inspection is recommended. The urgency is high because active growth suggests a moisture issue within the AC unit or ductwork that will not resolve on its own. A proper assessment involves inspecting the evaporator coils, drain pan, and ductwork for the source of the moisture and the extent of the contamination. Surface cleaning the vent is insufficient if the internal system is contaminated.

A reputable service will use methods that contain the spores during cleaning to prevent spreading them throughout your home and should provide verification, such as before-and-after imagery or data, showing the issue has been resolved at its source. Addressing this now can significantly improve your indoor air quality and alleviate the symptoms.
