How to remove and prevent closet mold on leather items?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall in our Jumeirah apartment, has started to get these black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I stored in there. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago and it’s getting worse, even though the rest of the room seems fine. What’s the best way to completely get rid of this and prevent it from coming back, especially with another humid summer coming up?

Leather items in a closet on an interior wall are classic targets for mold in Dubai. The wall is likely cooler than the room's air, causing condensation and trapped humidity—perfect conditions for growth, especially with AC use creating temperature differentials.
First, remove the affected items immediately. For leather, wipe them down with a soft cloth dampened with a 1:1 solution of water and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Test on a small, hidden area first. Then let them dry completely away from direct sunlight, which can damage the leather, before storing them elsewhere. To address the source, empty the closet. Wipe all interior surfaces with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. However, cleaning visible growth doesn't address the hidden moisture source. The problem is likely inside the wall or due to a lack of air circulation. Prevention is key. Leave the closet doors open to allow your room's AC to circulate dry air inside. Consider a small, rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier (like silica gel packs) placed inside the closet to absorb ambient moisture. For a permanent solution in a sealed closet, a small ductless dehumidifier unit can be installed. If the speckles return after cleaning, the issue is systemic. A professional inspection with a borescope can identify hidden condensation within the wall cavity or other moisture sources. In many Jumeirah apartments, this is linked to the building's envelope and requires a targeted approach to manage the micro-climate within that specific space. |
