Should I remove shower mold myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for two years and just noticed these black spots creeping out from behind the silicone sealant around our shower. It's been super humid lately, and the bathroom's small window doesn't seem to do enough for ventilation. What's the best way to tackle this mold myself, or should I call my building management first?

For a small patch of mold (under 10cm x 10cm) that's only on the surface of the silicone, you can likely handle it yourself. The key is to address the moisture source first. In Dubai's humidity, bathrooms without powerful extraction fans are mold incubators. Run the exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower, and keep the bathroom door open to allow air circulation.

To clean, avoid bleach as it only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the roots. Use a dedicated mold remover or undiluted white vinegar. Apply it, let it sit for an hour, then scrub. The mold will likely return if the underlying silicone sealant is porous and harboring spores. In that case, the permanent fix is to carefully cut out the old sealant, treat the underlying area with a fungicidal wash, let the wall dry completely, and then apply new, high-quality mold-resistant silicone.

If the mold is extensive, has penetrated behind tiles or walls, or if you notice a persistent musty smell, this is beyond a DIY fix. In an apartment, you should call your building management first. Tenancy laws and building regulations often place the responsibility for structural moisture issues and ventilation system maintenance on the property owner. They are obligated to investigate and remediate the source, such as checking for hidden pipe leaks or ensuring the extractor fan is venting properly and has adequate suction. For confirmed, persistent problems, professional assessment with lab testing can identify the species and guide the correct remediation protocol.
