How to prevent mold in Dubai closet storage?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has developed black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. I noticed it about a month ago after that really humid week we had, and even though I cleaned it, the musty smell is still strong. What’s the most effective way to prevent this mold from coming back in our humid climate, especially inside closed spaces?

Mold in closets is common in Dubai due to high humidity, especially during summer months. The enclosed space traps moisture, and leather items are particularly susceptible. The most effective prevention combines moisture control, airflow, and routine maintenance.

First, address the humidity source. Closets on exterior walls are prone to condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the humid outside air. Ensure your AC is running efficiently and consistently, as this is your primary dehumidifier. Keep closet doors ajar for several hours each day to allow conditioned air to circulate; stagnant air promotes mold growth. For severe cases, a small, standalone desiccant dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like silica gel packs) placed inside the closet can make a significant difference.

Second, inspect the closet itself. Check for any hidden leaks from adjacent bathrooms or AC condensate drain lines. Ensure items are completely dry before storing them. Avoid storing leather goods in plastic bags, which trap moisture; use breathable fabric bags instead.

If the musty smell persists after cleaning, the mold may have penetrated porous surfaces or be growing within the wall or behind baseboards. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture mapping can identify the exact source of the problem, which is often not visible. They can also perform air or surface sampling to identify the mold type, which informs the correct remediation strategy. For valuable items like leather goods, consult a specialist restorer.
