How to remove mold and prevent wall moisture permanently?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom has patches of black mold, and we only spotted it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. We’ve been in this Jumeirah Village Circle villa for about three years and never had an issue until this past humid season. What’s the most effective way to not only clean this but to stop the moisture from coming through the wall in the first place?

The most effective approach addresses both the visible growth and the hidden moisture source. In Dubai's climate, mold behind furniture is common due to high humidity and condensation against cold exterior walls, especially during humid season.

First, identify the moisture source. The wall is likely an exterior wall. The constant cycling of air conditioning cools the wall surface, while humid outdoor air causes condensation inside, particularly behind a wardrobe that restricts airflow. This trapped moisture feeds the mold. A permanent fix requires stopping this condensation cycle.

For removal, wearing an N95 mask and gloves, clean the affected area with a detergent solution. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the root structure. For porous surfaces like drywall or plaster, if the mold has penetrated, the affected section often needs to be cut out and replaced after the moisture issue is resolved.

To prevent recurrence, improve insulation on that exterior wall to reduce the temperature difference that causes condensation. Most importantly, ensure constant air circulation. Leave a gap between the wall and any furniture. Using a small desiccant dehumidifier in that corner can also help manage localized humidity.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is recommended to verify the wall's integrity and moisture content. They can use thermal imaging to pinpoint exactly where and why condensation is forming, which is crucial for a permanent solution.
