How to safely clean mold from AC condensation?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I finally pulled out their toy chest that's against the wall in our Sharjah apartment and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading behind it, probably from the AC condensation. What's the safest way to clean this immediately to protect my family, and should I call a professional company or is DIY enough?

Stop and do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing a large patch of black mold releases a massive amount of spores into your air, which can severely worsen your children's respiratory symptoms. The priority is to isolate the area immediately.

Move the toy chest and keep the children away from that room. Close the door and place a wet towel at the base to contain the spores. Increase ventilation in the rest of the home by opening other windows, if possible.

For a contamination of this size and given the health symptoms, professional remediation is strongly advised. In the UAE's climate, AC condensation is a perpetual moisture source, and what you see on the wall is often just the surface growth; the hyphae can penetrate porous materials like drywall. A certified inspector can identify the moisture source, assess the full extent, and safely contain and remove the contaminated materials following industry standards. They will use HEPA filtration to scrub the air and prevent cross-contamination.

If you must address it before a pro arrives for a very small area, wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Lightly mist the mold with a diluted vinegar or detergent solution to suppress spores, then wipe it away. Never use bleach, as it is ineffective on porous surfaces and can add dangerous fumes to the humid air. However, this is a temporary measure. The underlying wall material likely requires professional assessment and replacement to truly resolve the issue and protect your family's health.
