Is ceiling mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots that have started spreading along the ceiling in our master bedroom closet. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it after this past winter's humidity. It’s gotten noticeably bigger in the last few weeks. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, and is this something I should notify my landlord about immediately?

It is very possible the ceiling mold is contributing to your kids' cough. Mold releases spores and microscopic fragments that are respiratory irritants, especially for children. The persistent damp cough you're describing is a common reaction. The fact that it's spreading quickly confirms an active moisture source, likely condensation from your AC unit or a small leak in the roof or plumbing chase.

You should notify your landlord immediately and in writing. Under Dubai rental regulations, the landlord is responsible for maintaining the property's structure and ensuring it is habitable, which includes addressing moisture intrusion and resultant mold that impacts health. Document the mold's growth with dated photos to establish a timeline.

This requires professional assessment and remediation, not a DIY approach. The rapid spread suggests a significant moisture issue behind the wall or ceiling. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to find the source and take an air or surface sample for a lab culture to identify the mold type. This evidence is crucial for holding the landlord accountable and for the remediation team to know exactly what they are dealing with.

Until it is handled, keep the closet door closed and the room well-ventilated. Run your AC on dry mode to help lower indoor humidity levels, which are a primary driver of mold growth in Dubai's climate. Do not attempt to bleach or scrub it, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and make the coughing worse.
