How to permanently remove mold from closet walls?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s gotten way worse since the weather got more humid last month. What's the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good without ruining the walls?

First, remove all items from the closet and isolate any affected fabrics for washing. The black spots indicate active growth, likely fueled by Dubai's high humidity and a possible condensation issue from an adjacent AC chilled water pipe or external wall.
For a small area, scrub the surface with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour, not the root structure. After cleaning, dry the area thoroughly with a fan. However, if the mould has penetrated porous materials like drywall or plaster, the affected section must be cut out and replaced to remove it permanently. The critical step is identifying and eliminating the moisture source. In many UAE villas and apartments, this is condensation from uninsulated AC ducts or pipes running through the closet, or moisture wicking through an external wall. Simply cleaning without fixing this will guarantee its return. For a persistent or large-scale problem (over a few square feet), a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source with thermal imaging and moisture meters. They can also verify the mould type, as some species common in the region require more stringent containment during removal. Remediation often involves removing the affected building material, treating the area with antimicrobial solutions, and applying moisture-resistant coatings before rebuilding. To prevent recurrence, ensure the closet remains dry. Use a dehumidifier or moisture absorber like silica gel, leave the closet door ajar for air circulation, and verify that no cold water pipes are dripping condensation. Addressing the root cause is the only way to achieve a permanent solution. |
