Safely remove black mold near kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I’ve just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind the wardrobe in their bedroom, which is right next to the AC unit. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for years, but it seems worse since the humidity really kicked in last month. I’m really worried about their health, especially my youngest who has asthma. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of it myself without risking my family’s exposure?

Black mold exposure can definitely trigger the coughing and asthma symptoms you're describing, especially in Dubai's high humidity where AC units often create condensation that feeds mold growth behind walls and furniture.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can handle it yourself with strict precautions. First, isolate the area: keep the children and anyone with asthma completely out of the room during and after the process until it is fully dry and ventilated. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety goggles. Before you start, mist the mold patch lightly with water to prevent spores from becoming airborne during cleaning. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, or a dedicated mold remover. Avoid using bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can irritate the lungs.

Crucially, you must identify and fix the moisture source. In your case, the proximity to the AC unit is a major clue. The drain line may be clogged or the insulation around the cold air ducts may be causing condensation on your walls. Simply cleaning without addressing this will result in the mold returning quickly.

However, given the location (behind a wardrobe, near an AC unit), the health of your children, and the fact it's recurrent, this likely extends beyond what you can see. Mold grows hidden within wall cavities, especially from chronic AC condensation, which is extremely common in Jumeirah villas. For this situation, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the full extent of the hidden moisture and mold. Remediation then involves physically removing contaminated materials under containment to prevent cross-contamination. A company with its own microbiology lab can also test to identify the mold species, which is important for assessing health risks and verifying the cleanup was successful.
