Black mold on damp interior wall: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s an interior wall, and the room always feels damp no matter how much we run the AC. What's the best way to deal with this properly in a Dubai villa, and should I call a professional or is this something I can handle myself?

This is a professional job, not a DIY project. The damp interior wall and persistent humidity indicate a hidden moisture source, likely a small plumbing leak from an adjacent bathroom or a condensation issue within the wall cavity itself. In Dubai's climate, where ACs run constantly, cold interior walls can cause significant condensation if insulation is inadequate.

Attempting to clean visible mold without identifying and rectifying the root moisture problem will result in immediate regrowth. Disturbing the mold yourself also risks spreading spores throughout your home's air. The black spots could be Stachybotrys (toxic black mold) or another species; only professional testing can confirm the type and necessary remediation protocol.

You need a professional inspection. A certified mold assessor will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact source of the dampness behind the wall. The remediation process involves isolating the area, removing affected materials like drywall safely, and using industrial air scrubbers to clean the air. For a villa, always verify the company holds a valid DHA permit for environmental testing and remediation.

After the leak is fixed and mold removed, the long-term solution will involve repairing the wall with proper insulation to prevent future condensation, a common issue in villas here due to the extreme temperature differential between the indoors and outdoors.
