Should I call a pro for recurring bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom's grout has been getting these black spots for a couple of months now, especially behind the toilet where it's a bit dark. I tried scrubbing it with bleach last weekend but it came back within a few days. I live in an older building in Deira and I'm worried the humidity is just too much for a DIY fix. Should I just call a professional cleaning company, or is there a stronger product I can try myself first?

Recurring black mold in bathroom grout, especially after a bleach scrub, indicates a persistent moisture issue that surface cleaning won't resolve. In Dubai's high humidity, this is common. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the root structure of the mold embedded in porous grout.

For a DIY attempt, use a dedicated EPA-rated fungicidal cleaner, not bleach, and ensure the area is completely dry for 48 hours after application with constant ventilation. However, if the mold returns within days, the problem is likely deeper. Older Deira buildings often have inadequate ventilation and hidden moisture behind tiles.

A professional inspection is warranted. They use moisture meters to detect hidden dampness in walls and can perform an air quality test to identify spore types and concentrations. Remediation involves addressing the moisture source, often by improving extraction, before any antimicrobial treatment. For severe or recurring cases, this diagnostic approach is more effective than repeated cleaning.
