How to permanently remove mold from wardrobe and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the back of the bedroom wardrobe on the exterior wall. It's been worse since the humidity picked up last month. What's the best way to treat this ourselves to kill the mold for good and what can we do to stop it from coming back?

Black spots in a wardrobe on an exterior wall are a classic sign of condensation mould, very common in Dubai's climate. The exterior wall is likely cooler from AC, and humid air condenses on it, creating the damp environment mould needs to grow.

For treatment, first put on an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part distilled white vinegar. Scrub the affected area with a stiff brush dipped in the solution. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and does not kill the mould roots (hyphae) embedded in porous surfaces. After scrubbing, wipe the area down with a cloth dampened with the same solution and allow it to air dry completely.

To prevent it from returning, you must control the humidity and condensation. Leave the wardrobe doors open for a few hours each day to improve air circulation. Consider using a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier inside the wardrobe. Check for any cracks or poor sealing around windows or walls that might be letting humid air into that space.

If the mould covers an area larger than one square meter, has a persistent musty odour, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue is likely more serious. This indicates a possible leak in the building envelope or rising damp that requires professional diagnosis. In such cases, a certified inspection with moisture mapping can identify the exact source of the water intrusion, which is the only way to achieve a permanent solution.
