Is this mold too severe for a DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the bedroom has these black and greenish splotches that we just noticed when moving furniture. It's been incredibly humid lately and the room always feels damp, even with the AC on. I'm worried about my family breathing this in, but I'm not sure if this is something I can tackle with bleach and vinegar or if I need to call a professional company to deal with it properly. How can I tell if this mold problem is too severe for a DIY fix?

The damp feeling and visible splotches behind the wardrobe are classic signs of a condensation-related mold issue, very common here due to Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials on walls.
For a small area (under one square meter), a DIY approach with a dedicated mold cleaner (not just bleach, which doesn't penetrate porous surfaces) can be attempted. However, the location behind furniture suggests it's been growing unseen for some time, likely extending deeper into the wall. If the discoloration covers a larger area, has a musty odor, or if the wall feels soft or damp to the touch, the problem is beyond surface cleaning. In such cases, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the moisture source and extent. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside wall cavities. Remediation often requires controlled demolition, proper containment to prevent spore spread, and industrial air scrubbers—procedures far beyond DIY. For health safety, especially with family members present, identifying the species through lab testing is the only way to know the actual risk, as visual identification is impossible. |
